Since March 2003 I have volunteered with the Mentorrinnenetzwerk of the J.W.Goethe University of Frankfurt/Main, and as based at the Bio-Zentrum.

This began with a press conference in March 2003 in which I was interviewed before an audience of prospective students:-

MENTOR & WORKSHOP LEADER

The Mentorinnenetzwerk is based at the Bio-Zentrum and provides career training for female science students (see sidebar links). My own contribution comes in the form of,

1. a series of workshops entitled Shape-Up which were undertaken in 2004 and 2006

2. mentoring PhD students in aspects of research and career placement.

The SHAPE UP Programme

As described in the PDF flier below, “The Shape Up programme in career development combines focused insight into industry expectations with practical group exercises that are designed to help participants in estimating your own individual skills set and so help contribute to your individual career portfolio.

Participants can expect valued guidance in how best to critically evaluate job advertisements, how to estimate and then align their own varied skills and competencies towards securing and developing their next appointment, and then how to build and shape their curriculum vitae. The one-day programme is led in English but will have German comments.” The marketing flier…is here…!

Mentor

As a Mentor, I have helped guide a number of students towards their career ambitions. This has included advice on poster design, job applications and in securing industry positions.

While collaborations with colleagues and mentees at the Mentorinnenetzwerk in Frankfurt/Main continue, further courses have now extended to Berlin where, for March 2008 I have been invited to lead a two day workshop in Academic Writing at the Charité Universitätsmedicine, Berlin. The workshop is designed to support the MA programme in Consumer Health Care.
